I-house Move-in Day
You can start moving in to International House on July 3.
July 4, 2017 (Tuesday)
4th of July
Enjoy the 4th of July events and fireworks across NYC!
July 5, 2017 (Wednesday)
1st day of Global Link, Orientation & Welcome lunch
Global Link officially begins on July 5! We look forward to welcoming you to our office for an orientation. The orientation will provide us with an opportunity to get to know each other and to review the schedule of activities for the month. We will also review various policies and will answer any questions you may have. After the orientation at the office, we will all go to a local restaurant for lunch.
After our welcome lunch on the first day, we will bring you on a boat cruise of New York City. The boat cruise will depart from the West Side of Manhattan and will circle around the New York Harbor. You will have a chance to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, to name a few highlights.
Harlem Cultural Tour
With the guidance of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, we will spend the day learning about Harlem. Our office and International House is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, which is right next to Harlem. We will learn about how Harlem has changed over the years and continues to be an important cultural hub.
We will be volunteering with a leading, non-profit agency and the largest provider of shelter for homeless families in NYC.
< WEEK 2 >
United Nations visit
We will organize an information session at the office in the morning, where we will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet other UN staff as well. After lunch, we will visit the United Nations headquarters.
Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations
We are planning to visit the Permanent Mission to learn about MOFA's work at the United Nations.
We will invite professionals working in the field of education !
Columbia University Campus Tour
Three of the JICUF staff who are Columbia alums will give you a tour around campus and share their experiences.
Currently we are reaching out to alums to host a roundtable discussion on media and journalism.
Alumni Networking Event in NYC (July 14)
We'll invite ICU alumni in the New York Metropolitan area to come mingle with the Global Link participants!
< WEEK 3 >
Trip to Washington D.C. / Georgetown University
Global Link will incorporate a trip to Washington D.C. again next year! We will leave New York City by bus, and plan to reach Washington D.C. mid-afternoon. After checking into the dormitories at Georgetown University.
The National Institute of Health
We will visit the National Institute of Health (NIH) for a tour, followed by a lunch with ICU an alumni who currently works at NIH as a Research Scientist.
The U.S. Capitol and Smithsonian Museums
The students will enjoy a tour of the U.S. Capitol and have a chance to visit the Smithsonian Museums along the National Mall.
NHK Washington D.C. Bureau, World Bank, International Finance Corporation etc.
During the stay in D.C., we are planning to visit ICU alumni and former OYRs in various offices including the World Bank and NHK Washington D.C. Bureau.
DC Alumni Dinner
Students will have the opportunity to meet ICU alumni in the D.C. area!
The Tenement Museum provides a glimpse of the New York City history. Specifically, it focuses on how immigrant communities lived in New York in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Tour of Wall St.
Students go on a self-guided tour of Wall Street, and enjoy lunch in China Town.
Visit to Alumna Ms. Kazumi Pestka's Home & Tour of Rutgers University
ICU alumna Ms. Kazumi Pestka will host a gathering at her home in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Afterward, the students will have an opportunity to visit the Rutgers University campus. Rutgers has an exchange program with ICU and has a deep historical connection to Japan, with Japanese students studying there at the end of the Edo Period.
Visit to Ground Zero & 9/11 Tribute Center
We will visit Ground Zero and the 9/11 Tribute Center in order to learn more about the terrible events that took place on 9/11/2001. We will have a walking tour of Ground Zero led by someone with a direct connection to the events of that day.
